Disney+: What to look out for in 2021

Following on from Disney's recent investor day, a tonne of content was announced for the streaming service. Today, I'm going to dive in deep and have a look at the main content headed to Disney+ next year

WandaVision

Debuting on January 15th, WandaVision returns us to the MCU, 18 months after the last instalment - WandaVision marks the beginning of Phase 4 - the first phase to feature both theatrical releases and Disney+ series.

The 6 episode limited series will feature characters Wanda Maximoff/Scarlett Witch and Vision, living the ideal suburban life in the town of Westview,. trying to conceal their powers - but as they begin to enter new decades and encounter television tropes, the couple suspects things are not as they seem

Returning characters from the MCU include an older Monica Rambeau, daughter of Maria Rambeau (Captain Marvel), Darcy Lewis (Thor and Thor: The Dark World) and Agent Jimmy Woo (Ant-Man and the Wasp), other cast members include Kathryn Hahn as Agnes, the nosy neighbour who joins Wanda and Vision during their time in Westview. Evan Peters, known for playing Quicksilver in FOX's X-Men has also been cast in a mystery role in the series... could he be reprising the same role? Or could he be playing Mephisto... the rumoured villain pulling the strings in Wanda and Vision's false reality?

The series is set to set up a mini MCU event spanning three titles, with the events of WandaVision leading directly into Spider-Man 3 somehow where Doctor Strange will team up with Spider-Man in a rumoured multi-Spider story, which will then lead into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with Elizabeth Olsen set to reprise her role as Wanda.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Debuting in March, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a 6 episode limited series which reintroduces us to Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes following on from the events of Avengers: Endgame, where Steve Rogers gave up the mantle of Captain America, and handed the shield over to Sam.

The series is describes as a worldwide adventure that puts the duo's abilities to the test as they fight the anarchist group the Flag-Smashers

Originally meant to be the Phase 4 opener, delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic meant production had to be shut down, allowing the near completed Wandavision to take its opening spot. The series is set to feature the return of many MCU characters: including Sharon Carter, Baron Zemo, Batroc the Leaper and introducing many new characters including Wyatt Russell in the role of John Walker - a militaristic successor to Captain America created by the US Government.

Who knows what will happen during the series, but the fact the title doesn't feature "Captain America", you can sure bet it will involve Sam trying to prove that he can succeed Steve as Captain America.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier debuts on Disney+ on March 19

Loki

The God of Mischief gets his own series next year, with Loki set following the adventures of the titular characters moments after he escapes New York with the Tesseract during the events of Avengers: Endgame

Similar to other MCU series debuting this year, Loki will include a season of 6 episodes anfd the plot will involve Loki being brought to the mysterious Time Variance Authority organization after stealing the Tesseract during the events of Avengers: Endgame, and travels through time altering human history using it, ending up trapped in his own crime thriller

Not much else is known about the series as of yet, but confirmed cast members include Owen Wilson as Mobiuis M. Mobius, a member of the mysterious TVA. Richard E Grant, Sasha Lane, Sophia Di Matrino. Hugu Mbatha-Raw and Wunmi Mosaku have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

Loki debuts on Disney+ during May 2021

What If?

What If...? is an upcoming animated series where it will explore what would happen if major moments from the MCU occured differnetly. The series is set to feature the majority of MCU actors reprising their roles in these alternate adventures.

The first series will feature 10 episodes, with a second season of another 10 episodes already confirmed - expected sometime in 2022. Stories featured during the first season include Peggy Carter taking the Super-Soldier Serum, T'Challa beoming Star Lord instead of Peter Quill, and Winter Soldier taking on a zombified Captain America. Rumours include an episode focusing on Peter Parker as Hawkeye, Loki becoming worthy of Thor's Hammer, and an episode where Thanos could wipe out the other half of the universe

The show has potential to run for a long time, and personally I would love to see a Star Wars edition of this show - What If Mace Windu defeated Palpatine? What If Rogue One never died in battle? What if Luke fell to the dark side?

Marvel's What If...? is set to debut on Disney+ during Summer 2020

Hawkeye

In Marvel's 4th live action series of 2021, fans will be reintroduced to Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton aka Hawkeye and introduced to Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld who will be taking on the mantle of Hawkeye

Once again, not much is known about the series but rumours suggest the series will set up Kate Bishop's possible role in the Young Avengers, a title reportedly in development for Marvel Studios

It's said that the show focuses "on fan-favorite Kamala Khan - a 16-year-old Pakistani-American growing up in Jersey City. A great student, avid gamer, and voracious fan-fic scribe, Kamala has a special affinity for Super Heroes, particularly Captain Marvel. Not much is known currently about the spin off series to the Monsters Inc franchise, but what we do know is the main cast will be reprising their roles from the original film.

Six months after the events of Monsters, Inc., the city of Monstropolis is making the transition to be fuelled by the sound of laughter. Tylor Tuskmon, a recent Scare Major graduate from Monsters University, working as a mechanic in the Facilities Team, dreams of working alongside his idols, Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan.

Raya and the Last Dragon

Whilst still set to release theatrically worldwide, Raya and the Last Dragon will debut on Disney+ the same day as theatrical release via. Disney Premier Access. The service was launched with the release of Mulan, and is being looked at for future releases by Disney depending on how a) well the service performs; and b) how the pandemic is affecting cinemas

The film is the latest Walt Disney Studios animated feature and stars Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) and Awkwafina (Jumanji: The Next Level) as the titular characters.

Synopsis:

Long ago, in the world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when sinister monsters known as the Druun threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, those same monsters have returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the last dragon in order to finally stop the Druun for good. However, along her journey, she'll learn that it'll take more than dragon magic to save the world—it's going to take trust as well.

Similarly to Mulan, Raya and the Last Dragon will eventually be available to Disney+ subscribers at no extra cost. If a prediction could be made, a 3 month window for Premier Access could happen again and we could see the film available on Disney+ from June 11 for no extra cost

Raya and the Last Dragon arrives on Disney+ Premier Access on March 12

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

A brand new animated adaptation of Jeff Kinney's best-selling novel about young Greg Heffley is set to debut on Disney+ next year.

Not much is known currently about the plot of the film or any cast involved, but no doubt the adaptation will be one to look out for. No release date has been announced as of yet - but it is best to guess the film will be release Late 2021, potentially a Christmas release.

All of that and much more to come over the next 12 months! What are you most excited for to arrive on Disney+ ?

What's even better is we're currently running a competition to win a Year's Supply of Disney+ - more details can be found here
